Cropping and rotating

Cropping, turning and straightening do not change the original photograph. They are saved in your project and applied when you export or print, and you can undo or change them at any time.

Crop

  1. Choose the Crop tool (C). The box starts on the whole picture, or on the crop you applied before.
  2. Drag the handles to size the box and drag inside it to move it.
  3. In Properties, choose a shape: Free, Original, 1:1, 3:2, 4:3, 5:4 or 16:9. The swap button turns the shape on its side.
  4. Press Enter or click Apply. Escape or Cancel leaves the crop as it was.

Reset removes the crop and shows the whole picture. The size of the box in pixels is shown under the shapes.

Turn and flip

Use Image → Image Rotation:

  • 90° Clockwise (Cmd/Ctrl+]) and 90° Anticlockwise (Cmd/Ctrl+[)
  • 180°
  • Flip Canvas Horizontal and Flip Canvas Vertical

Straighten

Use the Straighten tool (S), or Image → Image Rotation → Arbitrary….

  1. Drag a line along something that should be level or upright, such as the horizon. The picture turns to match.
  2. Fine tune the angle in Properties. The Angle slider moves in tenths of a degree and covers 15 degrees either way. The Fine slider moves in hundredths of a degree, up to one degree either side of where it was when you picked it up, and springs back to the middle when you let go, so you can keep nudging. You can also type an angle in the box beside Angle, up to 45 degrees either way. Double-click the Angle slider to put it back to level.
  3. Click Crop to fit to crop away the empty corners the turn leaves, using the largest rectangle of the same proportions.
  4. Click Done or press Enter to keep the angle and leave the tool. Click Cancel or press Esc to put the picture back to the angle it had when you chose the tool, and leave. Reset puts the picture back to level.
